- AI dream interpretation: can be fun, but there's no science connecting interpretation to lucidity.
- Fixed-time audio cues: cues that fire on a timer rather than during your actual REM mostly land in the wrong sleep stage — or wake you.
The missing piece: REM-timed cues
The best-evidenced external trigger for lucidity is a light cue delivered during REM sleep — established in Stephen LaBerge's sleep-lab research decades ago. The reason apps don't offer it is simple: your phone has to know you're in REM, and until recently that meant a mask on your face or a wearable on your wrist. Dedicated mask hardware tried and mostly failed on exactly this — imprecise timing.
