Ludin vs free lucid dreaming methods: MILD, WBTB, SSILD and DIY alarms

Short answer: the free techniques work, and you should start with them — they cost nothing and they're the best-evidenced foundation there is. But they have a ceiling. The strongest published technique stack, MILD plus WBTB, produces lucidity on roughly 17% of nights even in trained practitioners, and it buys that by deliberately fragmenting your sleep. The ceiling nobody talks about

Two numbers explain why most people quit.

17%. That's roughly how often MILD plus WBTB produces a lucid dream, per night, in motivated practitioners in published research. It's the headline result for technique-only practice. It also means five or six nights out of seven, you do the work and nothing happens.

The sleep cost. WBTB gets its results by waking you in the middle of the night. Run several nights a week, that reduces restorative slow-wave sleep and leaves you tired. You are, quite literally, trading sleep quality for a one-in-six shot. Most people do that for a few weeks and stop — not because the technique failed, but because the price was too high to keep paying.

Why a DIY alarm doesn't fix it. The obvious hack is to set a phone alarm for "probably REM" and use it as a cue. It doesn't work, because REM onset moves by tens of minutes night to night with sleep debt, alcohol, stress and bedtime. Fire early and it lands in deep sleep and does nothing. Fire late and it wakes you. This is the exact failure that sank timer-based masks like the Remee.

What Ludin adds that no free method can

Free techniques all work on the practice side: they improve the odds that if you notice something odd in a dream, you'll act on it. None of them can put something odd into the dream at the right moment. That requires knowing when REM starts, and no amount of discipline gives you that.

Now the caveats, because a number without them isn't worth much:

The honest recommendation

  1. Week 1–4: journal every morning. Free. Non-negotiable. Without recall, nothing else matters.
  2. Week 2 onward: add reality checks and MILD. Still free. Many people get their first lucid dream here and never need anything else.
  3. If you plateau: try WBTB — and pay attention to whether the sleep cost is sustainable for you. For most people it isn't, long term.
  4. If the plateau holds: that's the point where a REM-timed cue earns its place, because you've already done everything technique can do. That's what Ludin is for, for $5.
